Brother CS6000i Reviews

Brother CS6000i
Brother CS6000i this is a beautiful sewing machine with lovely features, but if it doesn't work, what good is it? I took a chance and bought this machine, hoping I wouldn't get a lemon like the ones described in the reviews that mentioned the thread tangling in the bobbin.

Brother CS6000i electronic sewing machine is a step up from an entry-level mechanical machine like the Brother XL-2600i  and offers many more features. A one-step buttonhole with seven different styles is a plus, and a small LCD screen shows you the stitch settings. Adjustments are made with buttons, not dials, and it boasts 60 stitches. One particular strength, compared to other electronic machines, is a generous assortment of presser feet, including a walking foot, which helps feed layers of fabric through the machine at the same rate.

The best features: Automatic Needle-down. Comes with specialized feet. You don't need a foot control. Just set a speed, and its like cruise control. Automatic buttonholes. Lots of stitches and it advises which foot. Automatic threading. It handles all threads, metallic, invisible, rayon, etc easily. Easily punches through multiple layers of fabric & batting. Can stitch one at a time stitched using needle up/needle down. It is light enough to be portable to classes. You can drop the feed dogs to free-motion quilt. I seldom have to fiddle with thread tension.

Weakness: The built-in light, while cooler running than most, is not bright enough alone. It also has a blue cast. There is no pressure foot tension adjustment, although I don't find myself missing this as much as I expected to. The overall lift you can get for the presser foot is marginal for where 2 blue jeans seams intersect. Don't expect the feed dogs alone to handle it.

Printed on the CS6000i machine is a diagram showing exactly where to place the thread. Simply follow the numbered diagram printed on the machine, and you'll have your machine threaded in no time!

5.0 out of 5 stars what I wanted and more
I spent hours researching sewing machines online before ordering. I saw that this was one of the top machines on Consumer Reports and on Amazon.

I ordered it on a Friday night online from Amazon, and received it at my doorstep by 3pm on Monday with free shipping.

I am a very new to sewing. (I have had a 30 yr old hand-me-down Singer with just a couple basic stitch options tucked away in the closet that I have used on some curtains). I was wanting a machine to learn how to make some little quilts, do some hemming and alterations, and maybe sew some sun dresses for my daughters.

So far I really like:
A) Lightweight
B) Hard case to place over it to keep my children from messing with it
C) Display screen that informs me which presser foot is needed
D) Guides printed directly on the machine showing the proper threading of bobbin winding, bobbin threading, and upper thread threading
E) Little threading gadget that makes it so easy to thread the needle
F) Very nice manual that is easy to follow
G) Comes with a large quilting table
H) Very affordable- especially compared to similar models of other brands

Possible concerns:
A) The work light isn't very bright. but I am using it by a window
B) The presser foot lever and needle threaded are plastic and do not seem very durable- maybe because the only other machine I have used was a metal tank. Not sure how they will hold up in the long run.

UPDATE: 11/2012: Machine is still going strong after 2 years! I've made little quilts, Halloween costumes, mending repairs, etc.... No issues with the plastic pieces that originally concerned me.

1.0 Out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MACHINE!

After reading the instructions and winding the bobbin (which was very easy), I threaded the machine, upper and lower, according to the instructions (again, very easily done) and sewed a few straight lines on a test piece of fabric. It worked beautifully. I then inserted my very light-weight quilting piece (2 pieces of light cotton fabric with light batting in between) and then started to sew a straight line on the quilt. It worked great for about 2 feet and then it tangled into a huge mess in the bobbin thread and gave me an E-6 error message (tangled thread--duh!).

I got it untangled, reinserted my quilt, and it promptly jammed again with the bobbin thread creating a mass of thread. I spent several hours trying to get the machine to work again on the test fabric and it did the same thing, over and over. I tried rethreading it again, upper and lower, several times, along with adjusting the tension in several ways. The machine never sewed another stitch.

I am very disappointed in this machine and I am returning it to Amazon. I strongly suggest that no one else waste their time and money on this machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy
I purchased this same model 3 years ago this month. It cost about $50.00 more, but I couldn't be happier. I use it daily. I'm an avid sewer. I recently made window curtains. I mostly use it for straight stitching, but the buttonholer is easy to use, as are all the special feet, the instruction booklet is user friendly and the staff at Brother International is very helpful if you need extra parts or have any questions.
